Sebastian Konig - Track, Match, Blend! - VFX Basics: Camera-Tracking & Match-moving - Training Video Review

Getting a little busy here this week, no sooner had I finished my review of Nathan Vegdahl's Humane Rigging, I decided I had some time to do a review of another Blender Foundation Training DVD.  This time it's "Track, Match, Blend" authored by Sebastian Konig.  A very well known and experienced Blenderhead.  He is currently part of the Blender Mango Open Movie project, working on most of the 3D tracking that is required in that movie.

So given that Sebastian is the go to guy as far as all things camera tracking & object tracking is concerned, it is very handy that he decided to make a set of video tutorials that cover the important topics of tracking in depth.

For those that do not know, Camera Tracking is the ability analyze 2D film footage and from that film footage determine where the camera must have been situated when the scene was being filmed.  From calculated camera position it is then possible to place that calculated camera inside Blender and have Blender's 3D camera move in the same way.  This allows you to match movements on film with the movements of the 3D Camera inside Blender so that you can have 3D objects that react as if they were in the filmed scene.

Related to Camera Tracking is Object Tracking, which instead of tracking the camera position, tracks how specific objects move withing a scene.  Being able to match real 2D film footage with 3D generated objects is essential in special effects work, and it is these topics that the DVD most focuses upon.

The first thing to note is that the videos have a runtime of almost 11 hours which seems to be longer than the information provided on the official website of the DVD.  This could just be that I calculated the runtime wrong or extra information was added after the product website was put online.  Either way this DVD is not a quick watch, you will need to set aside a considerable amount of time to take in all the information this DVD presents.

Everything required to follow along with the topics and tutorials discussed in the videos are provided on the DVD.  This includes all the blend files, video footage that camera and object tracks are created from, appropriate versions of Blender, and a copy of vlc media player for windows and mac users, which will allow you to play the videos contained within.

The web browser interface to the DVD is very easy to navigate and is well presented, allowing the user quick access to the videos they are interested in.  If you do not want to use the web browser to access the content of the DVD, then you are not required to as you can directly open all the video tutorial files from the DVD in your operating systems file manager.

The first video on the DVD is an introduction by Sebastian covering what will be taught on the DVD, and giving examples of what will be possible once you have watched the entire DVD.  Sebastian's narration is very clear and well paced throughout the entire DVD.  The videos are very clear and well encoded.

After the introduction, the tutorials are split up into 5 sections and each sub-section covers a specific aspect of camera tracking/motion tracking.

The first section "Tracking Basics" covers 2D forms of tracking that can be carried out with Blender, and it also covers the basic parts of the Blender tracking interface that Blender uses.  Single Point, Two Point (covering tracking involving rotations), Stabilization and Four Point (planar) tracking methods are covered.  Each different 2D tracking method is fully explained and their various different uses gone over.  Not only tracking topics are covered but basic uses of compositing are covered so as to allow replacement of certain parts of 2D footage and to add things such as motion blur to more properly integrate additional footage.  On the whole a very simple but clearly explained section of the DVD which aides in slowly working your way into the more advanced 3D tracking topics presented in the next section, as well as presenting very useful information if you ever need to do 2D tracking tasks.

Where as the first section covered 2D tracking and didn't really need the 3D camera to carryout its work, this second section "Camera Tracking" does use Blender's 3D Camera and concerns tracking points on 2D footage so as to convert them into points in a 3D scene.  Sebastian takes a good deal of time explaining how points on 2D film are converted to 3D points using a process called "Photogrammetry", and although this is a complex topic, Sebastian simplifies it making it understandable.  Having gone over the theory of Camera Tracking we get to do our first actual track of a real video shot, with Sebastian slowly and clearly going over the individual steps required to carry out the first track.  Here also more theory is explained, but this time in regards to the various interface settings and their effects on Blender tracking software, again all clearly explained.  Handily the anatomy and terminology used with conventional cameras is covered, things such as focal length, depth of field, and lens distortion are all covered, as is why it is important to understand these concepts while carrying out tracking with Blender.  As a final part to this section descriptions of both what proxies are and how they are used within Blender is covered, as is bringing your tracked shot into the compositor for further post processing work.  Automatic feature detection is covered, but really just as a way to warn you about its current flaws and why you really should not use it unless you have no choice.  Refining camera solves and tracking is covered in some detail, though bear in mind that Blender's refinement feature is more of art than a science, however Sebastian does a good job of explaining the refinement settings included with Blender.  I found this section of the DVD very clear and well laid out.  The explanation of the theory and terminology of both camera settings and tracking was useful to me.  By the end of this section you should be able to do most standard camera tracking tasks without any difficulty (I could by this point).

The third section "Advanced Tracking Techniques" covers topics which are not so easily dealt with automatically by the tracking system and so requires more ingenious tricks and techniques to get the results required.  Specifically adding motion blur to 3D computer generated models which have been added to film footage of a scene which has been tracked.  Other standout parts in this part of the DVD where the methods by which original film footage could be masked out and replaced with 3D models using various Blender modifiers and clean plate techniques.  It is known that Blender's tracker currently does not deal too well with camera shots which only rotate around a fixed point and have very little perspective shift information within a shot.  So Sebastian goes over various ways you can get around these issues to retrieve a successful camera track from a shot that has these problems.  You can think of this section of the DVD as a description of the various edge cases you will encounter in real world production, and as far as possible the solutions that can be thrown at them, to make them work for you.

While the third section covered tracking the motion of a camera in the 3D scene the forth covers tracking the position and movement of objects in film footage.  This is in general much harder to do because there is usually much less perspective information for Blender's solver to work with, but Sebastian again shows the various ways in which you can help Blender give you the best possible chance of getting a good object track.  Having then gotten a successful object track we are then shown how we can do basic compositing on it, integrating various objects that are computer generated into a 2D film scene, using a combination of Blender Internal renderer and Cycles to make the object appear to belong to the scene.  Though this DVD is not about learning to use Cycles, because it only give enough information to start you along the path of using Cycles.

The fifth and final section covered on the DVD is more of a tidy up section, it covers all the topics which Sebastian feels were missed in the previous sections of the DVD or didn't quite fit anywhere else.  Using the tracker to capture face deformation and apply basic digital makeup is covered, as is exporting the tracking data created in Blender to other applications such as Cinema 4D and After Effects.  The last two videos in this section I found really useful as they covered how you can make a tracking shot more likely to be successful and accurate by planning your shot before hand, as well as how to successfully place markers on your 2D film footage to ensure this.

Before I watched this DVD I would say I knew very little about camera tracking and would have found it a chore to get a successful track out of Blender.  After watching it however I feel in a much stronger position with my knowledge of tracking and I think it will greatly improve the level of tracking I will be able to do with Blender.  Having searched around the web for tracking videos for Blender I can say that for now this is the most accurate and clear source of information on Blender's Tracking system.  I especially liked the detailed explanations of the theory behind tracking that will certainly help.

I would say that this DVD will be useful to anyone wanting to learn both the theory and practical side of Match Moving/Camera Tracking in Blender, from beginner to semi-advanced.

So excellent DVD, well worth the money.

Sebastian König - Blender Green Screen Keying Concepts - Tutorial Video Review

Whenever Sebastian König comes out with another Blender video tutorial, I know that I will have the next few hours of my day planned out for me. So when I found out the that Mr König had put out a Keying/Green Screening tutorial off I went to purchase the video.

First thing to note is that this tutorial video covers how to use Blender Compositing Node system to produce Mattes/Keys from a green/blue/red screens, using various techniques. A feature which is vital if you want to extract live action footage from a scene and composite different elements together.

This video is the second in the series of CMIVFX tutorials covering the topics of how to use Blender to carryout various studio level production tasks using Blender's Compositing system. The previous tutorial (Blender 3D Compositing also produced by Mr König is related to this video and it would be useful to have seen that previous video because some of the topics covered are easier to understand having seen the previous video. But if you are not totally new to Blender or Blenders Node editor you should be able to follow along without any difficulty even if you haven't seen the earlier tutorial.

The production quality of the video tutorials is very high and encoded very clearly so there should be no problems viewing the streaming video from their website. I had been busy and had to be away from the web for a while so I downloaded the video and watched it from within VLC, again it was very clear and easy to watch.

Chapter 1 - Covers the initial setup of Blender and its interface, going over how to get various still and movie sequences into Blender Compositing system so as to allow you to do the various Keying processes. Throughout the tutorial various 2k and 4k files are used (studio quality). For those that do not know the theory of how GreenScreens work Mr König describes briefly the theory of how they work. After the theory a few ways that could be used to make Mattes/Keys are described and Mr König explains how they work and explains how they are not useful for the needs of this tutorial.

Chapter 2 - Having covered some of the bad ways to pull a Matte from images in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 covers better methods using Blender Channel Key Node. Covering how to pull Mattes from both still and moving images with and without the effects of motion blur upon the images. After all, it's all very well to pull a Matte from a still none motion blurred image, but when the images are moving, dealing with the problems motion blur introduces is very important and it is explain and handled very well by Sebastian. Sebastian shows both how to use the nodes to manually pull a Matte using Nodes, as well as Nodes that do it automatically. Often tutorials just mention the automatic ways to pull Mattes rather than explaining how it all works, the flexibility that is afforded in understanding exactly how things work makes you much more likely to be able to pull more difficult Mattes in future. The methods used throughout all the chapters remind me a lot of a book "Steve Wright - Digital Compositing For Film And Video" another excellent source of digital compositing information, which is much easier to follow when in video form as this tutorial is.

Chapter 3 - Covers making a custom made Matte puller using Blender Node system, useful when over methods that Blender provides do not automatically work as required. This section is fairly involved but was clear and easy to follow.

Chapter 4 - After having pulled at Matte from the previous chapter, Lightwrapping are explained and then a demonstration of how to create them are gone over. After lightwrapping is covered, a simple method of making Vignettes are demonstrated. This time however the shots that are being processing are more difficult as it has a drummer drumming which has large amount of motion Blur and simpler Matte pulling methods are not sufficient.

Chapter 5 - Covers the uses of Garbage Mattes and how to combine multiple Garbage Mattes to achieve a clean Matte pull on different parts of a short, as different parts of the short required different methods to get clean results. Excellent demonstration of how to use Blenders mask like features to achieve the result needed.

Chapter 6 - Channel Blur is a slightly advanced chapter because it covers how to take lower quality GreenScreen shots which are pixelated/lower resolution, and uses various YCbCr colorspace tricks to fake a higher resolution Matte. How the trick works is very well explained although it would have helped to have had more information on exactly how the YCbCr color system works, though enough information was given to be able to carry out the color channel blurring trick, and if your really want to know all the detailed specific of YcbCr Colorspace you can always do a google search. This is a very useful technique, makes me wish Blender had an inbuilt automatic node for doing this trick as standard. A really useful website (www.hollywoodcamerawork.us) is mentioned that hosts many different GreenScreen stills and movies. The images used in this chapter have a woman with a transparent veil dancing around, and as a result it's a much harder task to pull a clean Matte, but Sebastian demonstrates how to do it efficiently with multiple Garbage Mattes and Masks from within Blender.

Chapter 7 - Rotoscoping, follows on from the previous chapter. Because the woman is dancing, an animated Garbage Matte is created using Blender RotoBezier feature, using this method Sebastian demonstrates the usefulness of Rotoscoping and Blender RotoBezier feature.

Chapter 8 - Compositing, this final chapter composites the Keyed images that were obtained from the previous chapters, using Blenders Compositor. Using the Images as Planes addon method of positioning extracted GreenScreened footage into Blender 3D Viewport is explained. Another useful trick described is recoloring of extracted GreenScreen material.

Each chapter is very well explained and there are numerous examples of how to use the various techniques described throughout all the chapters. Sebastian paces his descriptions of that various tasks in each of the chapters very well.

This tutorial stands well on its own or with the previous Compositing tutorial that Sebastian did. It in my opinion is well worth the money and very informative and full of useful tricks and tips. It will almost certainly have something useful in it for someone looking to improve their GreenScreen/Matte pulling skills.

Sebastian König - Blender 2.5 - 3D Compositing - Streaming Online Video Tutorial

I tend to be a big fan of ebooks and pdfs rather than videos, as I usually find that videos don't tend to get into enough detail. When I heard that Sebastian König was going to come out with another Blender tutorial, and that it would be on Compositing in Blender 2.5, I knew I would be watching that video!

Unsurprisingly Sebastian's newest tutorial video is about Blender 2.5's Compositing system. This is interesting to me for 2 reasons, first it's a tutorial from Sebastian, and this means that even if I am not particularly interested in the topic he is teaching (see previous review of Vray with Blender), you know that it will be well produced and well taught. The the other reason is that it's a tutorial about Blender 2.5's Compositing system. Taking these 2 facts together and knowing that Tutorials on using Blender Compositing system are few and far between, while ones that specially teach you about 2.5's system are almost as rare as unicorns. The second this tutorial was available to purchase, I did so.

For those that do not know, Blenders Compositing system allows you to make alterations to scenes and pictures, without having to rerender things using Blender's rendering engine or any other external engine. The Blender's Compsitor is integrated with Blender so has the advantage of having extra information to draw upon when carrying out compositing tasks, as well as generally being much faster than having to rerender a scene. It is also true that a lot of effects that can be achieved easily within the compositor, would be extraordinarily difficult using just Blender rendering system.

If given the above, Blenders Compositor sounds like it would be very useful, then you no doubt want to start using it to get all the benefits it has to offer in your own work? It's at this point one of Blenders biggest short comings crops up, lack of documentation! Trying to get to grips with some of the features of Blenders Compositor can be a hair pulling experience. If you have ever seen some Blender Compositing videos on the likes of youtube/vimeo, they often end up being just a video telling you to connect things in certain ways and poof you get out a particular effect, very little time is given over to explaining why and how particular node setups work.

Sebastian's tutorial is not at all like this, he not only takes that time to cover how to connect the nodes in special ways to achieve different things, but also goes into a good amount of detail as to why you connect things the way he does.

Sebastians's video starts off covering the basics of how to use the compositor, by using a simple scene as an example. This first section will help people who have never used Blender's Compositor before in getting up to speed. The coverage of using Mask Layers, Vector Blur, ID Masks and Defocusing Nodes will come in very useful for all Blender Compositor users, as questions on how to use these Node come up frequently.

Once the simpler topics have been covered, the video moves on to covering Scene and Render Layers and how to use them to color correct certain parts of an image. I found this section of the video very clear and easy to understand. I especially liked the coverage of Mask Layers, as you don't often see them described and I think it will be new to a lot of beginning and even experienced Blender users. Another thing of note was how Sebastian highlighted how nodes can interact with each other and sometimes give results that you don't expect and how you can get around some of the problems and bugs that are in the Blender Compositor.

After going over Scene Layers and Render Layers, Sebastian moves on to describing in some detail what Pre-multiplication is and how you can use it to prevent compositing artifacts (such as having a strange outlines around composited parts of a scene). This issue causes a lot of problems with people starting out using the compositor, so having it covered as a topic on its own is very useful. You only have to look at the number of posts on BlenderArtists.org to realize how many people are completely vexed by Pre-multiplication and the issues it can cause.

Coverage of how to use both Raytraced and Approximate Ambient Occlusion passes in helping to improve the overall lighting with in the compositor are very informative, as is the information on how Approximate Ambient Occlusion can be improved by using the Subsurface Modifier to improve its results by balancing the face sizes of a scenes geometry. I didn't know about this so I was very pleased to see it included in this video.

One of the most difficult subjects for beginning compositors to get to grips with is the topic of Pixelmath. Pixelmath is a fundamental subject when using any compositor/image editing software. Sebastian takes a good deal of time to describe how it works and how it affects the various blending modes when using the Mix Nodes in the compositor. I found it clear and easy to understand so I think other people will to. Especially useful were the links directing to wikipedia, which give in-depth coverage of how the different Mix modes work as far as their Pixelmath formulas go. It greatly helps in understanding a lot of what is done later on in the rest of the video, so is worth watching until you get it.

One section of the video I really liked and found very interesting was the break down of how the composite passes can be split apart and combined back together to get almost the original scene back and how to use this to alter many aspects of how a scene looks. This may sound unimportant but often one of the questions asked is how do particular render passes combine and Sebastian takes time to explain how, this is very hard to come by information. He also shows how to get around some bugs with the shadow pass (which has since been fixed in Blender SVN) and the refraction pass bug (not yet fixed).

To fix the bugs Sebastian uses the Object ID Pass Index and as a result goes into a large amount of detail as to how to use ID Masks and Object Index Passes, a very useful feature and will make your compositing tasks within Blender much easier.

One amazing section of the video is the information on how to relight a scene using the Blenders Compositor, Render Layers and Lightgroups (similar to how LuxRender does with real time adjustable render lights). The technique is demonstrated using a bunkers scene. The transformation to fully lighting scene is very impressive to watch, Blender users with a interest in Lighting will love this section.

This concludes the first major part of the compositing tutorial, from here on in, the topics change to show how to composite models into live actions footage using data obtained from a previous SynthEyes tutorial. You do not need to have seen the SynthEyes tutorial or have SynthEyes to follow along though.

A nuclear accident scene is modeled and the compositor is used to add various special effects to the scene, various masking techniques are covered so as to use a Camera Tracked scene in the compositor.

After all this the final scene is color corrected and graded using the compositor and briefly it is shown how to make a short movie from the scene.

I can honestly say I don't have any criticisms of the Sebastian's tutorial itself, but with cmivfx.com the hoster. Their video delivery system, when I was watching it often disconnected and there was no easy way to restart it, also I found that the flash video version of the tutorial had a bit missing at the end. I hope for the flash version of the video this has either been fixed or will be fixed. Luckily the html5 compatible version of the video was complete, although unfortunately that is still in beta and not yet compatible with Firefox (though they promise it will be). Another issue with the html5 player was that there was no full screen option (well there was it just did not seem to work). Videos from cmivfx just don't tend to be a crisp as those on blendercookie, though I am not sure why. The disconnect and buffering issues would be helped greatly if they allowed you to fully buffer up videos before watching them, like you can with blendercookie.com.

So in conclusion, Sebastian has done an excellent job with this Blender Compositing tutorial, it is currently the best tutorial out there on Blender 2.5's Compositor, well worth the price, just a shame cmivfx lets him down.

Sebastian Koenig - V-Ray - Introduction - The Blender Connection - Streaming Video

Sebastian Koenig has been busy making video tutorials, this time it covers V-Ray a 3D render which supports many advanced rendering features a well as being very quick to render.

V-Ray was created by a software firm called Chaos Group. It is a proprietary, closedsource render, which comes in many different versions. One of those versions being V-Ray Standlone, which is the V-Ray render working without the use of a graphical frontend.

Sebastian describes the various steps involved in obtaining, installing and configuring for use both V-Ray and Blender, so as to integrate them together into Blenders workflow.

It is important to note though, that V-Ray unlike other renderers such as Yaf(A)Ray or LuxRender is not free and is not opensourced and comes with a DRM dongle. If you do not want to install the commercial version of V-Ray you can get the demo version but you must register with the chaosgroup.com website to download it (very annoying). The demo version limits the maximum resolution at which you can render a scene (600 x 450 pixel according to Sebastian), this won't be an issue if you are following along with Sebastian's tutorial apart from at the very end when he renders a scene which is larger than the limit imposed by the demo version.

The V-Ray Standlone render costs $299 U.S. Dollars (as of 13 January 2010) according to chaos groups website. Also V-Ray requires a dongle (a USB key) to run with a valid V-Ray license key installed on it. The DRM issue with the license dongle, I know is a big issue with a lot of people (me included), as is the fact that it is closed source. I have no real issue with the price for this version of the render (as it is an excellent render) but I do with the closed source, DRM'ed, status of it. I run Fedora 12 Linux which is completely opensourced and totally free, I also feel that V-Ray goes completely against the spirit of Blender. My innate distrust of all DRM based hardware and software (aka potential for root kits and the like) made me loath to review V-Ray at all but Sebastian put a lot of work into making the tutorial, so a review of it seems only fair.

So with the above in mind, I know all the criticisms above are not things Sebastian can do anything about. With this in mind I will review this tutorial ignoring the issues above and just rate the video in terms of the information Sebastian provides and how well he presents it.

At the beginning of the video Sebastian goes through downloading both the Blender V-Ray export script and obtaining and installing the V-Ray Maya software (which contains the V-Ray Standalone executable). After having obtained all the relevant pieces of software and scripts, Sebastian goes through how to configure them on both Windows and Mac platforms, though not for Linux platforms, although the procedure is pretty much the same for the Linux platform as it is for the Mac platform. One issue to be aware of is that Sebastian installs the software using root account privileges, this is not needed and should not be used unless you are sure you know what you are doing. Also when Sebastian was going through the procedure to connect to the License server he used ip addresses to specify the address of the license server, if you are using dhcp to assign addresses you may have to adapt the method used by Sebastian. More information on getting the information required for the license server (such as ip addresses) could have helped the viewer here for those that don't know networking specifics, though Sebastian does mention that V-Ray comes with a good online manual to explain setup, though if you are going to read the V-Ray manual it could somewhat negate Sebastian video tutorial, at least as far as license server setup goes.

Having got all the software and script installed and license registered, Sebastian moves on to briefly describing and setting some of the most basic and important settings that the Blender V-Ray script exposes inside the Blender interface, demonstrating a large number of the scripts features on a demonstration scene. The resolution of the streaming video from cmivfx.com causes a slight issue here as it was often difficult to tell the effect of various settings and changes Sebastian made to the V-Ray interface script even though he did a lot of compare and contrast shots of render results. Though Sebastian was careful to explain as well as he was able the various features verbally, so the low resolution issue was somewhat mitigated. Another issue with the video was that the streaming site must have been under heavy load, because at certain times of day the video would not stream without stuttering and occasionally dropping the video stream, causing me to have to retry to watch the video later. This did not happen often but is always an issue with streaming media that don't allow you to download the videos you have paid for (another of my pet annoyances).

Once Sebastian had explained some of the basic features he gave a very useful description of the various Global Illumination methods and settings, covering how they relate to Blender and the V-Ray script. Strangely even though V-Ray supports caustics this was only briefly mentioned and not used in the tutorial, because Sebastian says it was really an advanced feature, which was a shame as really it should been used.

Especially informative was the information on Irradiance Map and Light Map Caching and the ways in which it could be used to speed up the rendering times. The other major features are also covered in some detail such as Multi-sampling, and various other features to numerous to mention.

One area where I think a clearer explanation would have been useful was for Hemi-spherical Subdivisions. I was not really clear on what they were representing as far as lighting and shadows were concerned, and to me it just seemed to be some arbitrary value which makes the quality of renders improve, but what it actually did was never explained (at least as far as I could tell).

At about an hour into the tutorial video, Sebastian having covered the basic settings, changes topic to focus more on lighting an outdoor scene and the various light setting of the V-Ray script. Areas that stood out in this section were the coverage of how to use HDRI images and light sources and using Blender node editor with the render images produced by V-Ray Standalone, very useful and very informative.

After having gone over various techniques for outdoor lighting, the tutorial then goes on to describe the various settings and techniques used to light an indoor scene, showing how to both light and assign materials and textures of an indoor hallway type building, and using various settings to make it look semi-realistic.

Toward the end of the video, as a bonus Sebastian demonstrates briefly how to setup V-Ray by rendering the tutorial title scene, showing some of the more advanced settings like two-sided V-Ray materials and sub-surface scatting settings.

So all in all a good tutorial with basic explanations of most of the things you will need to know to get started using V-Ray from within Blender. So if you are a V-Ray person you will find this a very useful tutorial.

Now all Sebastian has to do is give us a tutorial on LuxRender and Yaf(A)Ray, so us Opensource types can play as well, as I don't much enjoy reviewing the dark side closedsource stuff!

Sebastian Koenig - Blender Shading and Fur - Mammoth - Streaming Video

It's been busy for me lately so I had not been able to review much in the way of Blender tutorials and also there was not a lot left to review. So I was pleased to find out about a new video training tutorial release from Sebastian Koenig, this time on the topics of Shading and Fur application to his Mammoth model series created in his previous 3 tutorial videos.

This is the 4th video tutorial released by Sebastian and follows on from the previous tutorials listed below:
While you don't have to have seen the previous tutorials to understand the ones that come after it, it certainly helps, though Sebastian does explain most of the information you need to know at the beginning of each tutorial and goes over in brief some of the additions from earlier videos.

So with that in mind what can be said about the newest addition, here the product overview:

Since fur is often skipped over in training materials for Blender because of its fiddly nature and the fact that it can bring machines to their knees, it is good to see that Sebastian did not shy away from this sometimes difficult area to teach.

The tutorial starts by going over the initial material, lighting and scene setups that are used. This helps if you either haven't seen the previous videos or your memory is a bit foggy (mine was). Some may argue that this information was not needed and could have been time better used to explain fur topics, but others would argue the exact opposite.

I found the information on clip start and end shadow buffer values very informative and even learned a few quicker ways to set clip start and end values (I didn't know you could use the W key in the viewport to set the values).

A little more information on what a shadow buffered is and why altering the clip start and end values is a good thing to do could have helped for those that are not clear on what shadow buffers are, but this is not a beginners tutorial so it's to be expected. I also found it helpful that Sebastian explained that fur shadows do not work as expected with ray tracing and have to use shadow buffers, another useful bit of information to store away until needed.

After going over the shadow buffers the topic moves on to setting up the lighting in the scene, so as to get a well lighted model to show off the fur and shading better. Ambient occlusion usage is also covered and a few of the options that can be set for it are explained briefly.

The tutorial then moves on to a quick overview of the basic materials used on the mammoth model. A lot of this information was covered in previous tutorials but it still serves as a useful refresher (at least for me).

For the tusks on the mammoth Sebastian uses subsurface scattering and explains the SSS settings which again I found useful, especially what the Scale value stands for in relation to SSS.

At 22 minutes into the tutorial the primary topic of the tutorial is reached, that being adding fur to the mammoth. It may be frustrating to some having to wait a whole 22 minutes before you ever actually see any fur but the preceding information will probably make things easier for a lot of people.

Sebastian covers most of the major parameter controls for controlling how hair is generated and affected. He almost from the very beginning quickly explains how to use Parent and Child Strands to improve the appearance and performance of strand modeling, and later on in the video even covers the strand simplification controls, which I think is the first time I have seen that explained in a video tutorial, so to me that is excellent.

After covering the strand control parameters Sebastian goes on to explaining weight painting and vertex groups and how they are used to control how and where Strands are generated. The techniques described are used in the video to prevent fur from being emitted from the bottom of the feet and various places on the head of the mammoth, as well as to control the length and density of fur on parts of the mammoth, and use extensively in the rest of the tutorial.

On the weight painting section I liked the use of the Blur weight painting mode to make gradual transitions in weight painting boundaries.

At this point (35 mins) a test render is done with the current strand settings and Sebastian details how to speed up the render using the Strand Rendering option.

Once the render is completed Sebastian moves onto describing the Particle Mode and demonstrates how to alter the positions of strands using the various Particle Mode tools such as Comb and Add etc. He uses this mode to improve the position of the Strands in the render to make it look more fur like. A good demonstration of Point Select mode is given and Sebastian shows how to use the Strand Step value to make the strands more controllable.

At this point the video moves on to altering the materials and texture settings of the generated fur strands, things definitely take a more advanced turn at this point.

Most of the major parameters are explained, but in some places I found it a little difficult to keep up with some of the material and texture settings.

I would have found it useful to have had more information as to how and why the various material settings were used, especially in relation to how to use the Stencil mask type. As this Stencil mask type is referenced a lot and the description of why it was used was not very clear to me. It did seem to me that at some points it became a mass of button clicks with some things not really being explain clearly enough. I maybe need to go back and re-watch those bits. Other than that everything else was well explained.

The use of the color blend texture with fur was explained very well, though I think it should have been spelled out that it is used to make hair transparent at the end, to make it fade out and have a feathered and not sharp end. Though again this is not a beginners tutorial, so chances are we are assumed to know this.

Multiple Strand/Particle Systems are used and layered together and Sebastian takes some time to explain how they combine together to produce the final fur output.

A nice feature of the tutorial is that Sebastian takes the time to explain how to make various types of Strands such as ponytail strands and braids, very handy. Also covered were using various clumping settings to make the mammoth fur look matted and clumped. If nothing else the information on the Kink and Branch settings will be worth knowing as it is very, very useful.

So all in all this is another excellent video tutorial from Sebastian, as mentioned above the only thing I found confusing was the use of Mask/Stencil textures to add variation to hair colors, but that is likely to be my fault not Sebastian's.

Sebastian Koenig has created another 2 tutorial videos, using the previously made mammoth modelling tutorial (reviewed previously).

I will not be doing a review of the 2 new tutorials as basically all the comments about the previous modelling tutorial apply to these tutorials as well.

Basically excellent and worth the money although slightly more expensive given their run lengths versus their price. But still well worth the money.

Sebastian Koenig - Blender Organic Modeling - Mammoth - Streaming Video Review

cmiVFX.com is a training site for the graphical and visual effects, covering many systems and platforms.

cmiVFX delivers most of its content in the form of streaming video which can be purchased and watched online. The system requires the use of flash player for the videos to be viewable.

I was debating with myself as to weather I should review this site or not for a number of reasons. The first being that the streaming videos are only available for viewing online (as far as I can tell). Which means that you constantly have to be connected to the internet with a good broadband connection to see the videos that you purchased.

Obviously this is fine so long as you are connected and do have a fast connection. Unfortunately I don't have a particularly great connection speed so therefore would have benefited greatly from a downloadable version of the purchased video so I could watch offline. The second reason is partially related to the first in that the streaming technology they use seems not to allow hitting the pause button when I first starting a video stream so as to allow my connection to buffer more of the video before it starts to play to prevent skipping and buffering. This really annoys me as it is completely inconsiderate. After all I paid for the content I should really be able to press pause and have more of the video download to my machine before I start the video again. Third would be the fact that I really think the video formats should always be in open formats such as ogg and not be tied to having to use some sort of flash based system.

From the above it should be clear why I was mostly against reviewing these videos. However, this was all before Sebastian Koenig decided he wanted to put some tutorials of his on the cmiVFX.com site. I mean really this is Sebastian, he does things with Blender that reach the levels of massively awesome (do a search on google for Sebastian Koenig Fly to see what I mean).

Sebastian's tutorial covers the stages involved in creating a realistic model of a mammoth, all starting from a cube.

The first thing I noted (just before purchasing it) was the price. At $49.95 it is a fairly expensive video tutorial. Yes it is 5 hours but still it does seem rather expensive to me. Even more so given the other complaints mentioned above.

Issues with price aside, the video tutorials quality is very good in both terms of content and viewing quality (almost no fuzziness or pixellation artifacts). It is not a beginners tutorial though, you are really expected to know your way around Blender and be a reasonably good modeler. This is not surprising as the range of topics covered within the tutorial is quiet broad.

Very helpfully Sebastian clearly describes what he is doing throughout the video and I had no problems understanding what he was saying with his accent (German I think) but then I am English. So if you have a problem with accents this could be something to keep in mind. Unfortunately there are no on screen key press displays in the video, though Sebastian almost always describes what all the keys are that he is using.

The video covers all the stages involved in creating and modelling the mammoth from setting up a background image, using the grease pencil, box modelling, poly to poly modelling, subsurfacing, weight painting, using array modifiers, sculpting and such things. Extensive use of proportional editing is also gone through and even though this is not a beginners tutorial Sebastian does spend some time going through some of the basics for those advanced modellers coming from other modelling environments.

So all in all the videos are excellent and the informational content is extremely good (not surprising given what Sebastian can do). And just on the content of what he teaches I would have to rate the video very highly.

However the system that Sebastian is hosting his videos upon just makes me uncomfortable. If you are ok with a completely locked in system where you can't download the videos you legitimately purchased and can be sure to be connected to the net all the time and have an always quick connection, then you will be ok. The videos that are streamed are very clear and the interface is reasonably clear and doesn't take up too much screen space.

Taking into account the issues I have, I think it only fair to give 2 review scores one on just Sebastians tutorial and another review score of cmiVFX.com video delivery system.

I can only hope that Sebastian finds a better system for delivering his videos as they are excellent, or that cmiVFX comes up with a better more user friendly video delivery system.
